Anna Vakili Criticises Love Island's Direction Amidst Rise of 'Fake Relationships'
Former Love Island contestant Anna Vakili has voiced her concerns about the current state of the show, claiming that it has deteriorated since her appearance in 2019. Vakili, who gained popularity during Love Island's fifth series, suggests that the programme has become increasingly 'toxic' and rife with 'fake relationships.'
Vakili's time on Love Island saw her coupled with Sharif Lanre, Jordan Hames, and Ovie Soko before her departure on the 52nd day. Nearly seven years after her stint on the reality series, she reflects on how the show has changed. Vakili argues that the shift to airing twice annually has contributed to its decline, stating, "It's become too much." She believes the constant cycle leaves viewers with little anticipation, which was an element that contributed to the show's earlier success.
The influencer also points out that contestants now often enter the competition already familiar with each other through connections like mutual management or past events, adding further pressure and drama within the villa. According to her, these pre-existing relationships create additional tension that wasn't present in earlier seasons.
Vakili distances the current show from the hopeful romantic element it once supposedly possessed. "In the past, it was a mix of people looking for fame and those genuinely searching for love," she says. Nowadays, Vakili feels contestants primarily aim for social media fame rather than finding a partner. Her comments reflect a belief that much of the current on-screen romance is crafted purely for the cameras and audience engagement.
Despite these observations, Vakili has successfully leveraged her Love Island fame into a flourishing career as an influencer. Together with her sister Mandi, she co-hosts the 'Sisters in the City' podcast, amassing over a million followers across social media platforms.
Her critique adds to ongoing discussions about the show’s evolution and its focus. While Love Island continues to attract viewers, there's a segment of past contestants and fans who question the authenticity and intentions behind the relationships portrayed. Vakili's perspective lends weight to these concerns, particularly regarding the show's direction and the influence of its expanded airing schedule on its original charm and ethos.
